A practical review of business meaningownership quality and access for enterprise AI use cases.
An AI answer about revenue can betechnically well formed and still leave the business arguing about what revenueincludes. The same problem appears when two systems use different customeridentifiers or a supplier record has no clear owner.
For SAP professionals evaluating BusinessData Cloud, readiness should be assessed against a defined business use case.Moving or connecting data does not settle its meaning, quality requirements, orpermitted use.
This SAP Business Data Cloud readinessguide explains how U.S. enterprises can examine those foundations beforeexpanding AI. The examples describe proposed evaluation practices. They do notassume that a platform automatically resolves every source-system inconsistencyor that every capability is included in the current subscription.
What AI ready enterprisedata means
AI-ready data is information that issuitable for a particular AI use case, with enough context and controls tosupport the intended decision. Suitability depends on the task; a monthlymanagement report and a time-sensitive operational action may require differentfreshness and detail.
Gartner predicted in February 2025 thatorganizations would abandon 60% of AI projects unsupported by AI-ready datathrough 2026. [1] That was a forecast about a definedproject category, not a claim that 60% of all SAP or AI implementations hadfailed.
Use the warning to sharpen the readinessquestion. Specify the records, definitions, timeliness, and permissionsrequired for the task. Then test whether the available information supports auseful result in representative conditions, including incomplete and unusualcases.
Define the business question before selecting data
Consider an illustrative question aboutoverdue customer payments. The workflow may need a definition of overdue, thecorrect legal entity, the relevant open items, and the timing of recentreceipts. A generic collection of customer data may not establish those facts.
Have finance explain how it would answerthe question today and where judgment enters the process. Identify whichassumptions are stable and which depend on local policy or changing conditions.Document the result in language both business and technical teams can use.
This exercise limits unnecessary scope. Italso identifies disagreements early. If two teams calculate a shared measuredifferently, the project needs an accountable decision about the intendedmeaning before presenting one number as the enterprise answer.
Evaluate data products with the people who use them
SAP's learning material places dataproducts at the center of SAP Business Data Cloud. [4] Evaluate the available data products andtheir supported content against the selected business question, rather thanassuming that a familiar label supplies everything the workflow needs.
Review the meaning of important fields, available relationships, update behavior, and access conditions. Confirm how aconsumer can trace relevant information to its source and identify a changethat affects the use case.
Ask a business user to interpretrepresentative results. A technically complete record may still be difficult touse if the consumer cannot tell which organization, period, or transactionstate it represents. Capture those gaps as concrete requirements instead oftreating them as a general request for better data.
Make ownership a practical responsibility
A named data owner should have a definedresponsibility and a way to act. Decide who reviews a disputed definition, whoauthorizes changes, and how other affected teams participate. A label in acatalog does little if no one can resolve a real issue.
Gartner's September 2026 forecast predictedthat 60% of organizations failing to address data governance culturalchallenges would fail to govern AI successfully by 2027. [2] The emphasis on participation and behavioris relevant to SAP programs that have already invested in technical tools.
Give owners time and an escalation path.Track whether recurring issues are being resolved and whether employeesunderstand how to raise them. The operating process needs to keep working afterthe initial cleanup project ends.
Check master data beforeconnecting more workflows
Duplicate or inconsistent business partnerand product records can affect how information is joined and interpreted. A usecase may need to establish whether different identifiers refer to the sameentity before its output can be trusted.
SAP Master Data Governance supportsconsolidation, governance, and data quality. [5] Its relevant scope, deployment, andintegration should be assessed for the specific landscape. It should not betreated as an automatic substitute for assigning data responsibilities in thesource applications.
Review high-impact records and ambiguouscases with the business teams. Preserve the ability to trace historicalactivity when records change. Define how new records are created so that theproject does not clean one set of duplicates while the normal operating processcontinues producing another.
Review access and the information used in an answer
An AI use case needs an explicit view ofwhat information a user or workflow can retrieve. Check permissions across thecomplete path, including documents, applications, and any intermediate servicethat supplies context.
NIST's Generative AI Profile providesguidance on risks associated with generative AI. [3] Use that resource alongside theorganization's security and privacy practices when evaluating how retrievedinformation is selected, used, and exposed.
Test with users who have different roles.Confirm how the application behaves when information is unavailable or accessis denied. A convincing answer should not hide a missing source or silentlysubstitute information from a different scope. Make uncertainty visible enoughfor the employee to decide whether additional review is required.
Test readiness with a defined set of questions
Build a representative evaluation set withthe process owner. Include ordinary requests, disputed definitions, stalerecords, missing attributes, and questions that the workflow should decline toanswer. Establish the expected behavior before testing.
Review the evidence behind answers as wellas their wording. Check whether the information belongs to the correctorganization and period and whether the user can understand materiallimitations. Record how data changes affect the result.
GBSI's earlier article on enterprise architecture for an AI ready businessexplains the broader transformation context. The related discussion of clean core as a business strategy is usefulwhen deciding how source processes and extensions will remain maintainable asthe data environment evolves.
Keep readiness under review after launch
New business units, policy changes, andupdated data products can alter the meaning of a previously reliable answer.Assign responsibility for reviewing changes that affect the use case and rerunthe relevant evaluation cases.
Measure unresolved data issues, timerequired to correct them, and the proportion of outputs that need additionalinterpretation. Choose measures that reflect the business task. A high recordcount or successful data transfer alone does not establish that employees canuse the information confidently.
Start with one use case and expand as theoperating process proves repeatable. The organization should be able to explainwho maintains the information, how a problem is found, and how an affectedworkflow is corrected before broader adoption increases the consequences of adefect.
Quick answers aboutBusiness Data Cloud readiness
Does SAP Business Data Cloud automaticallyfix source data? Platform capabilities can support the data environment, butsource quality, definitions, and ownership still need attention.
Is AI readiness the same as moving data tothe cloud? No. Readiness concerns suitability for the intended use, includingcontext, access, and quality.
Where should a SAP team start? Select onebusiness question, identify its required information, and test representativeanswers with the process owner.
How often should readiness be reviewed?Revisit it when important data, definitions, permissions, or workflow behaviorchanges.
